KUCHING: Former UPP Batu Kawah chairman Liu Thian Leong, who is contesting as an independent in Batu Kawah, said he sees no reason for the Barisan Nasional (BN) to shut him out of the coalition if he were to win the election.

This is because BN will not close its door to “real leaders with grass root supports and who were also receptive to the policies of the present government.”

It is normal during election time that independent candidates are told that both the front and back doors of BN are closed even if they were elected, he reasoned.

“I have seen a lot of cases in the past whereby independents candidates are being told that both of the BN’s front and back doors are closed. And during this election time, the Chief Minister had made this statement – I have no comment on that. I feel that what is more important is to have support from people, we are able to work and serve the people and to make sure that their voices are heard in the DUN,” said Liu who will use the key as his symbol.

He made the remark at a press conference to launch his nine-point manifesto at his operation centre near E-Mart in Batu Kawa yesterday.

Liu said for the past one and a half years, he and his supporters had proved to people that they were able to serve the people.

Ensuring development of infrastructure between the urban and suburban areas are at par is his first priority in his manifesto, because he could feel and hear the cry for development in the area, said Liu.

On Tuesday night, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem stressed that no independent candidates would be admitted into the Barisan Nasional (BN) even if they were elected in the coming election.

Adenan added that there were situations in the past where genuine independent candidates knew they could not do anything even if they won, so they hoped to be taken into BN thereafter.

Liu would be facing BN-SUPP candidate Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and DAP candidate Christina Chiew.
