KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has clarified that some teachers are trained to assist in dealing with emergencies, if any, at schools nationwide.

Its deputy minister, Chong Sin Woon said apart from such training, every school had its own guidance teachers tasked with overseeing uniformed bodies, including the Red Crescent Society, who were equipped with basic knowledge in emergency aid.

“Therefore, every teacher should render assistance as soon as possible, should there be an incident or emergency at school,” he told the Dewan Negara here yesterday.

He was replying to Datuk Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif who proposed that a new position of a medical officer be created at schools to train teachers when dealing with emergencies.

Recently, there were few cases where students were bitten by snakes within school compounds in Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan.

In the latest emergency, a Year Six student, Lyana Shaqirah Amin, 12, died after she had fainted at a classroom in SK Sungai Pusu, Gombak.

Chong said the ministry did not close its eyes on the 3K Concept (Security, Health and Hygiene) at schools to ensure secured environment and hygienic condition for students.

“Nobody wants accidents in schools to happen but we, at the ministry will always ensure the 3K Concept was adhered to, to prevent any unwanted incident,” he said. — Bernama
