SARATOK: A 43-year old fisherman was fortunate to survive a crocodile attack in Sungai Krango, Krian near here on Wednesday afternoon.

In the 5.30pm incident, the victim was attacked by the reptile when he jumped into the river from his boat to wash off mud after he finished setting up his fishing net, known locally as ‘belat’.

Unfortunately, for the victim identified as Gadis Seman Nawi, he leapt right in front of a lurking man-eater which bit him on both limbs that left several punctured wounds on his thighs and feet.

The victim, in the throes of struggle for his life, was noticed by three off-duty firemen from Saratok Fire and Rescue Service (Bomba) station who happened to be on leisurely fishing nearby.

The firemen, identified as Hamden Bladi, Mohd Nordin Suhaili and Mohd Sukma Rambli, rushed to the aid of the victim who had managed to free himself from the jaws of death before they reached the scene.

Hamden, a team supervisor of the Saratok Bomba station said they sent the victim in his boat to his house in nearby Kampung Perpat where an ambulance was already waiting to rush him to Saratok Hospital. The victim told the firemen he managed to get freed by kicking the reptile’s head.

Meanwhile, according to sources from the State Fire and Rescue Services Department, this was the third crocodile attack case reported in the state this year. The department had also received two calls to help catch the reptiles which encroached into residential areas including one at Taman Susur Jambu, Sarikei recently.
