SIBU: Direct BN candidate for Bawang Assan Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh is aware of the importance of Bumiputera voters to BN in Bawang Assan this election.

He said Bumiputera voters gave BN excellent support in the last state election.

“Thus, I ought to visit them earlier. I do not want to disappoint them,” he told reporters after a meet-the-people session at Rumah Franky Bawok in Rantau Panjang, Thursday evening.

Wong was replying to a question as why he chose to start his election campaign in rural areas earlier than in urban areas.

It is not because of the challenge from Independent candidate Watson Bangau that he decided to campaign in the rural earlier. He said he would never underestimate his opponents.

“I will not view lowly whoever my opponents are, be they Watson, DAP or STAR. I only want to do my utmost best to contest.

“Usually after nomination, I will cover the rural area earlier which encompasses areas of Chinese and Iban voters.

“This time, I have to work very hard to cover the rural area where Chinese and Iban voters are before going to the urban areas,” he said.

There are about 100 longhouses in Bawang Assan constituency.

On DAP’s campaigning at longhouses, Wong said the party could campaign anywhere in the country as Malaysia is a democratic country.

Wong is defending the Bawang Assan seat for the fifth term.

This time, he is involved in a 5-cornered fight. The four other candidates are Stanley Chiew of DAP, Wong Sing Wei of STAR, and two independent candidates in the persons of Watson Bangau and Yeu Bang Keng.
