SEMATAN: The waterfront and estuary rehabilitation projects costing a total of RM14.69 million here will not only beautify the town to attract visitors but also mitigate floods in the area.

This was announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem when launching the projects here yesterday.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 3,000 at the function Adenan stressed the importance of maintaining a close relationship with Putrajaya so that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak can help secure more fund for the state’s development.

He added that during Najib’s walkabouts in the past six years he had announced project allocations up to RM3 billion in total besides the RM16 billion for the building of the Sarawak stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Dato Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, State Land and Survey director Datu Sajeli Kipli and Adenan’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu were among those present.

At the event, the chief minister also presented native customary rights (NCR) individual land titles – under Section 18 of the Land Code – to 377 recipients. Of the lot, 184 are from Kpg Telok Melano and Telok Serabang while 193 titles were issued to villagers from the Sungai Siru Kecil area.

Adenan also presented Bumiputera (agriculture) communal reserves land titles under Section 6 of the Land Code to 10 villages, namely Kpg Pugu (96.398ha), Kpg Belinsak and Bekuching (59.944ha), Kpg Sebat Baru (29.115ha), Kpg Telok Melano (91.49ha), Kpg Semapu (179.992ha), Kpg Sebat Melayu and Temaga Melayu (13.4618ha), Kpg Temaga Dayak (62.662ha), Kpg Siru Melayu (139.285ha) and Kpg Pasir Hilir (257.336ha).

As of March this year, since the new NCR land survey initiative was launched in 2010, a total 373 areas covering 538,945ha have been gazetted as communal reserves under Section 6. Of the total, 47 areas covering 51,070ha is located in the Kuching division.

As for individual land titles under Section 18, a total of 152,977 titles, covering 288,453.44ha for agricultural purposes throughout the state have been issued through various existing government policies.
