KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak Muaythai Association (PMS) have set a legal precedent in the country with the introduction of legal agreements for participants in the sport.

PMS president Jumaat Ibrahim announced yesterday that the agreement will be signed by all boxers before their involvement in matches organised by the association.

The aim is to protect tournament organisers and the boxers.

It requires each boxer to go for a medical examination by a doctor appointed by PMS before and after all bouts.

“You can never know what happens in the ring as anything could happen. If a boxer for example is seriously injured or worse while fighting, we must know that it really happened during the match and not due to other activities done by the boxer before each bout,” Jumaat added.

He also told reporters that PMS have appointed a legal advisor to handle legal matters for the association.

Datuk Idris Buang was unveiled as the PMS legal advisor during the Samarahan Muaythai Tournament launching ceremony held at a local shopping mall here yesterday.

Incidentally, Idris is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Muara Tuang constituency in the coming 11th State Election.

According to Jumaat, Idris is not only a seasoned lawyer with more than 20 years of working experience but is also his personal friend.

“We were involved in many activities together. On behalf of PMS, I am honoured that Idris has agreed to become our legal advisor as we needed his expertise so much.”

Meanwhile, Idris said he was honoured by the appointment.

He shared his opinion that all associations need legal advisors to help the organisation run smoothly and not get into trouble in legal matters.

Also present during the ceremony was Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang.
