MIRI: This year’s Go Bald campaign will again be a hair-raising sacrifice for Azizul Annuar, the youngest son of the chief minister, who will be shaving his head for a good cause.

“Cancer or more specifically, children suffering from cancer are often overlooked. In the media and Internet, we can easily get information relating to adult cancer but it is otherwise for childhood cancer. Therefore, I do believe that if everyone could help a little in spreading this cause, we could help a lot of innocent children in battling the disease,” Azizul told reporter during a press conference at Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) Transit Home here yesterday.

Though he reiterated that it wouldn’t be his first head shave, it shall be a memorable one as he is doing it for a greater cause.

“As long as I could remember, I have been following my mother, Datin Jamilah Anu, to many of her charity events. In some way, it definitely inspired and motivated me to follow in her footsteps. It kind of taught me that helping people not only eases their suffering, it makes me happy to be able to be the one to help those in need.

The 25-year-old economics graduate from Murdoch University of Perth in Western Australia further revealed that he did not feel any pressure due to his his father’s status.

So away from the madding crowd of election campaigning as his popular father makes heads turn, Azizul’s target is his peers to raise funds for the Go Bald campaign for cancer kids.

“Since last year, SCCS raised RM1.5 million in the whole of Sarawak campaign, let’s make it to RM2 million and not only am I getting my friends to support this, I do hope that with my strength, I can help spread the word,” he said.

Azizul will be getting his head shorn on May 15 at CityOne Megamall, Kuching.

He was accompanied on his visit to SCCS Miri Transit Home by Datuk Lorna Enan Muloon, who is also advisor to SCCS, and its president Jocelyn Hee.

Currently, SCCS operates two halfway homes in Kuching and Miri as accommodation for outstation children and their families receiving cancer treatment in hospital.

The main event for Go Bald 2016 will kick off simultaneously in Kuching and Miri on May 15 and on May 22; the event will also kick off in Bintulu and Sibu simultaneously.
