KUCHING: Local kickboxer Trevor Salang finally got his revenge after winning a re-match against Sabah’s Randall Kadayum on Sunday.

Trevor had lost in a three-round bout held in Bintulu in March this year which was billed as a fight between Sarawak and Sabah’s finest.

The Sarawak boxer was somewhat upset with media reports that he was defending a title when it was actually an exhibition match.

“Had it not been for the inaccurate reports by the newspapers, I would have let it slide and move on. After the report, I said to my self, I just have to fight Randall again and do it for the people,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He got what he wanted at last Sunday’s Samarahan Muaythai Tournament held at a shopping mall in Kota Samarahan.

Trevor won after the five-round bout went to the decision of the judges.

“I just couldn’t think of what would happen if I lose the bout as I trained hard for this. I learned a few things about him after our first match,” he said.

He added that he had to switch his strategy after the first round with Randall having the longer reach.

Trevor decided to fight more defensively, attack his opponent’s front leg and tire him down.

“He struggled with my leg kicks but at the same I was also aware that he is a southpaw fighter. I did it slow and steady, keeping away from his reach and making sure his kicks were not clean hits during the bout.”

When contacted yesterday, Sarawak Muaythai Association officials said the victory was good for the local muaythai and kickboxing fraternity with Trevor being a role model for Sarawak fighters.
