SIBU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has approved RM20 million towards building 60 units of new camp quarters at the 10th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) base at the Lanang Camp here.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi made the announcement at the camp today (May 5) during a function to mark the start of construction on the project.

He said when he came to visit the camp on Jan 31 this year, he deemed the quarters at the camp worse than squatters houses.

“I am very caring towards my ‘anak buah’ (GOF and police personnel under Home Ministry). I go to the ground to see with my own eyes to ensure their welfare is well taken care of.

“I come again today and I do not have until Jan 31 next year to implement the project,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid later promised that he would look after the welfare and well being of the GOF, police personnel and their family members as long as he is home minister.

“This is not a political promise but to translate into action what I said and how the prime minister feels for our security forces,” he added.

The camp built in 1968 with most buildings comprising wooden structures was in bad condition.
