Specialists serving in Sabah, Sarawak hospitals to enjoy better incentives: Dr Subramaniam

KUCHING: A proposal to review incentives for specialists serving in hospitals in Sabah and Sarawak is being studied said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam.

Subramaniam said the proposal had been submitted to the Public Services Department (JPA) for approval and expected to be approved and implemented in two to three months.

“We hope better incentives will ensure specialists serving in hospitals in Sabah and Sarawak will continue their services,” he told reporters after visiting the Batu Kawah Health Clinic, here today.

Subramaniam said the proposed incentive was to increase the incentives of specialist by between RM1,000 and RM2,000 from the current rate.

“Those required to serve in rural areas will also be given additional incentives as part of efforts to ensure more doctors returned to serve in Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

He said to overcome the shortage of doctors which has not only affected Sabah and Sarawak but Peninsula Malaysia as well, the Health Ministry was carrying out various initiatives.

“The situation is much better now, for example in the Batu Kawah Health Clinic, there were only three doctors in the past but currently 15 doctors are serving,” he said. -BERNAMA
