Flashback shows controversial activist Hii carrying a Sibu Airport road sign.

SIBU: Self-styled activist Hii Tiong Huat refused to be discharged from Sibu Hospital yesterday after he was admitted on Thursday for a minor injury sustained in a scuffle on Thursday afternoon at Sibu Gateway.

The man in his 60s suffered a slight cut on his hand when he was scratched by an aluminum piece during a struggle with security guards, who were brought in to take him away for allegedly disturbing an election activity there.

Police then arrived to take him to the station to protect him, and while there, he asked to be taken to hospital for nausea.

An ambulance duly sent him but he had only a scratch with no other medical complications.

The hospital intended to discharge him, but Hii insisted he was feeling unwell and demanded to be warded.

It was learnt Hii had been told he was discharged again yesterday morning but he insisted on staying in and demanded a CT scan.

The self-styled activist has created numerous headlines since 2008 when he first had trouble with Sibu Municipal Council for removing a road sign that showed the direction to Sibu Airport.

He was arrested several times thereafter for traffic obstruction in his serial capers to gain public attention on busy roads, mostly held solitarily to make complaints on the government.

He was arrested in Kuala Lumpur in 2011 on the eve of a Bersih activity in April, again for traffic obstruction on a busy road.

Police are now investigating Thursday’s incident at Sibu Gateway under Section 160 of the Penal Code for brawling in a public place.

In the 2pm incident, Hii made a scene by displaying a large banner for drivers passing by, urging them to vote for all the candidates in Sibu.

Coincidently, supporters of direct BN candidate Datuk Tiong Thai King was then hosting a political activity there.

Hii allegedly went over and riled up the supporters. He was repeatedly asked to leave until it sparked a heated argument and a source said security guards from a contractor company arrived shortly. This spiralled into a fight.

Hii was protected by a passerby in a red shirt when he saw Hii cornered. A security guard lodged a police report later on Thursday afternoon.

Hii’s wife and daughter had also lodged their respective reports on Thursday night.

Hii is expected to lodge another report after his discharge, and if that happens, police will have four reports to act on for fighting in a public place.
