KUCHING: Host Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur are among five teams in hot pursuit of Sarawak’s title on Day 3 of the 58th MSSM national schools track & field championships at Sultan Mizan Stadium (Wed).

Sarawak remain on top of the medal standings with the addition of two gold medals from throwers.

But it is the paucity of middle distance running talent that has exposed Sarawak’s weakness.

Bracly Varney’s silver (2:06.50sec) in the boy’s U-15 800m was the only medal from eight finals in the 800m and 1,500m on Day 3.

Dinesh Karuppiah won that race in 2:04.38 while teammate Dinesh Varma won the U-15 1,500m in 4:25.69sec to grab two gold for Selangor.

Pahang also bagged two gold from Koong Jia Lin who hogged the limelight by winning the girl’s U-15 800m (2:24.87) and 1,500m (5:04.36) in a space of four hours.

Sarawak was also somewhat disappointed in the six 4x100m relay finals with only two medals to show.

The fancied U-15 boys took the silver (43.58sec) after the Sabah team finished in 42.85sec to smash the record.

The U-15 Sarawak girl’s quartet managed a bronze (50.06sec) behind Johor (49.61) and Sabah (50.03).

Selangor won the boy’s U-12 and U-18 races in record-breaking times of 48.33 and 41.32sec.

Ngu Ing Biao was the toast of the Sarawak contingent on Day 3.

The Sarikei High School boy dominated the U-18 discus and threw 52.84m to improve the previous record by over 3m.

Teammate William Wong was third (46.14m) behind Labuan’s Jeffry Chan (48.66).

The second gold came from Lee Say King who won a tightly contested boy’s U-18 javelin.

Say King, runner-up in the event last year, threw his best of 52.35m in his first throw.

The Johor duo of Ahmad Rustam and Muhd Haiqal came very close with 52.24 and 52.13m to pick up the silver and bronze respectively.

At the end of Day 3, Sarawak was clinging on to the lead with a tally of 10 gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze medals.

The chasing pack comprised Terengganu (7-5-4), Kuala Lumpur (7-3-3), Selangor (6-6-5), Johor (6-5-10) and Pahang (6-4-4).

The five-day championships will end at 4.30pm today (Saturday).
