KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem is very pleased with the reduced margin for the opposition in urban Chinese-majority seats in the 11th state election.

Speaking at a packed news conference here last night, he said many Chinese voters had swung back to Barisan Nasional (BN) even though the ruling coalition managed to capture only, among others, Batu Kawah, Repok and Meradong.

“We have won 72 out of 82 seats, which is 87 per cent of the total. We have also managed to capture Batu Kawah, Repok, Meradong, Dudong and Piasau, all of which are Chinese majority seats,” he said at the old State Legislative Assembly Complex.

Adenan pointed out that seats that DAP retained also saw reduced majority.

This election, BN-SUPP wrested Batu Kawah, Repok, Meradong, Dudong and Piasau from DAP while the seats retained by DAP like Padungan, Pending, Kota Sentosa, Pelawan and Pujut all registered reduced majority.

Asked whether he would keep his promise of appointing a Chinese deputy chief minister, Adenan said: “The prerogative is mine.” He immediately quipped: “We will cross the bridge when we come to it.”

At a press conference on April 28, Adenan said he would appoint a Chinese deputy chief minister in his cabinet if Sarawakians voted for SUPP.
