SIBU: Direct BN candidate for Pelawan, Datuk Janet Lau Ung Hie, arrived at SMK Kampung Nangka with her family and some members of her election team at 8.50am yesterday.

She cast her vote about 10 minutes later.

Pelawan had 11 polling stations and 32,233 registered voters.

Contesting against Janet were incumbent David Wong of DAP and her niece Priscilla Lau from STAR who charmed voters with her fluency in English, Malay and Foochow.

Pelawan is one of five constituencies in Sibu along with Nangka, Bawang Assan, Dudong and Bukit Assek, of which only Nangka is a Bumiputera-majority seat Meanwhile, independent candidate for Dudong Dato Sri Dr Benny Lee cast his vote at SMK Bukit Lima at 9.06am.

He left with his team about 20 minutes later.

As he left, he told reporters his 106-year-old grandmother would have been the oldest voter in Sibu this election had she returned from Singapore to vote.

Dudong has 24 polling stations and a total of 29,028 eligible voters.

Dr Lee was embroiled in a five-cornered fight with incumbent Yap Hoi Liong of DAP, direct BN candidate Datuk Tiong Thai King, Ting Yiik Hong of STAR and independent candidate Casper Kayong Umping.
