KUCHING: Police will assist in returning the remains of Lance Corporal Ahmad Sabri Haron to his hometown in Kuala Terengganu, assures Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

According to Khalid, the identification was made based on a police warrant card found inside a pocket of the clothing on the body.

“As he was a member of the police force, the return of his remains (to Kuala Terengganu) will be handled by police,” the IGP said when met at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) mortuary yesterday.

Khalid also assured the family members of the victim that police would attend to any request made by them.

“All welfare matters relating to the family will be looked into.”

Ahmad Sabri was on board the ill-fated Eurocopter AS350 with Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Noriah Kasnon and her husband Asmuni Abdullah, Kuala Kangsar MP and Malaysian Palm Oil Board chairman Datuk Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad, the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Dr Sundaran Annamalai and pilot Capt Rudolf Rex Ragas.

Noriah’s remains were found along Batang Lupar riverbank on Friday.

The second body, was found early yesterday, was identified as that of Dr Sundaran.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who was also present at SGH mortuary yesterday evening, confirmed this.

“The autopsy done at about 11am (yesterday) by forensic experts has identified the second body is indeed that of Dr Sundaran, following thumbprint checks and identification of personal belongings found together with the body,” he told reporters.

Three more bodies were later recovered — one confirmed belonging to Ahmad Sabri, while the other two are yet to be identified.
