KUCHING: With the 11th state election over on Saturday, those contesting have until this coming May 20 to clear their election-campaign materials.

Newly elected Tupong assemblyman Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman and his team have already started working on it.

“I have engaged contractors for this job. They started dismantling my election campaign materials since last night (Saturday night). They are still working on it as we speak,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Fazzruddin estimated he had so far removed 70 per cent of his campaign materials in the constituency. “For the flags and poles, some I’ll keep and others will be given to those who wanted them. As for other materials, some will be sent for recycling and others disposed of.”

Meanwhile, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk James Chan said once the 14-day period set by the Election Commission (EC) was up, his men would clear the leftovers and report the matter to EC. MBKS would use the affected candidates’ election campaign deposits to cover the cost incurred, he said.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai noted that many campaign materials had been taken down in areas under DBKU.

“If you go around Petrajaya areas, you will see most of the flags and buntings have already been taken down this morning (yesterday). We have the undertakings from all candidates to take down whatever they put up within a week. If they failure to do so, DBKU will forfeit their RM3,000 campaign material’s deposit.”
