KUCHING: The soon-to-be-completed Matang Police Station at Mile 5 Jalan Matang will provide extra security and peace of mind to Matang folk.

Outgoing Padawan district police chief ACP Ng Ah Lek said a three-storey shoplot had been renovated two months ago to accommodate the police station.

“The station is expected to be operational in two months’ time,” said Ng after the handover of duty to new Padawan District police chief Supt Choo Yin Kok at Padawan Police District Headquarters here yesterday.

He said the station would provide Matang residents the convenience they need if they had to lodge a police report or deal with police matters.

“When the station is completed, people would not need to go all the way to IPD Padawan (in Siburan) which is quite a distance from Matang,” he added.

Earlier, in his speech, Ng who assumed the role of Padawan District police chief on Feb 1, 2015, hoped that Choo would continue with the initiatives he and his team had been pursuing such as the setting up of a police one-stop-centre in Kota Sentosa.

Recalling his stint as Padawan District police chief, Ng said he came with a mission to make changes and improve the police force under his wing such as the increase of Mobile Police Vehicles (MPVs).

“Previously, we only had a few MPV units. Today, we have more than 10 units to cover an area of around 1,500 sq km,” he added.

Choo was Simunjan district police chief for the past eight years.

“I am proud to be a part of a very strong team here and I will try my best to make IPD Padawan better.”

Witnessing the handover of duty yesterday was State Police Management Department head SAC Zamani Hamdan Sirat.
