SIBU: After waiting for about a year, Sibu Volleyball Association (SVA) has now received the Occupation Permit (OP) for its

Sibu Prudential Volleyball Association Stadium in Rejang Park here.

SVA chairman Dr William Ting Wei Ung was all smiles as he obtained the OP from the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) recently.

“And now, we’re racing against time to get the utility installations ready for the staging of Sukma volleyball event from July 22-30,” he told The Borneo Post.

Sarawak Sports Council has assigned SMC with the coordination of the Sukma volleyball event and tasked SVA with the technical back-up.

Ting said friendly matches for the Sukma selection team would be organised from May 12-15 for players to get familiar with the venue.

“Our target is two gold medals from the volleyball event,” he added.

Construction of the RM10 million volley stadium was completed in 2014.

It resulted from the partnership venture between SMC and SVA with the former providing the land while the latter looking into the construction, renovation and the maintenance.

The stadium, reputed to be the biggest of its kind in Malaysia and integrated with state-of-the-art facilities, has a seating capacity of 3,000.

It comprises a four-storey administrative block, a gym, a canteen, two volleyball courts furnished with high-tech rubberised flooring materials imported from Germany and the SVA office.

The OP was delayed due to some technicalities over the design and structure of the stadium.

SVA is exploring the possibility of hosting the 2017 SEA Games volleyball event.
