KOTA KINABALU: Ten Malaysians were among 22 people who were arrested in Sabah for suspected involvement in cross-border crimes.

Sabah Police Commissioner DCP Datuk Abd Rashid Harun said the 10 Malaysians were among 20 people who were detained around Tanjung Labian, Sungai Bilis and Tanjung Batu in Lahad Datu last Saturday while two more were arrested in Ranau on Monday.

“We caught them in planned operations and they were arrested in their own homes based on the information we received.

“The operations, the Op Gasak 3, which I led, began last Friday (May 6) and involved the police as well as all enforcement agencies including the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom),” he told reporters when met at the Sabah Royal Malaysia Police Healthy Lifestyle Programme, here yesterday.

Abd Rashid said they were detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, 2012 (SOSMA) for further investigations.

Head of the State Criminal Investigation Department SAC Datuk Salehhudin Abdul Rahman said all those detained were men between the ages of 22 and 75.

He said besides the 10 Malaysians, two others had birth certificates which said they were born in Sabah, another had a visit pass from the Philippines, while the rest did not have any identification documents.

“They are being investigated under Section 130J of the Penal Code for involvement in efforts to topple the government or possible involvement with the Royal Sulu Force. The section provides for a jail sentence of up to seven years or fine or both, if found guilty,” he said. — Bernama
