KUCHING: Organisers of the Sarawak Marathon Miri have postponed the event to July 31 as a mark of respect for the May 5 helicopter crash in which six persons including a Deputy Minister and a Member of Parliament were killed.

Through a press statement released yesterday, the organiser said the event which is scheduled for May 15 has to be postponed as a mark of respect over the demise of the six persons.

The other reason for deferment of the event was relevant government agencies were still trying to search for the wreckage of the main body of the ill-fated helicopter, although all six bodies has been recovered.

“Miri Police and relevant agencies have been working very hard during the recently concluded Sarawak Election, as such the committee are of the opinion that we should not over stress them as the inaugural Miri City Day Half Marathon 2016 will also be held on May 15 morning,” said the organiser.

The Online sign-up site of the 2nd Sarawak Marathon Miri 2016 was launched since November 26, 2015 while online sign-up site of Miri City Day Half Marathon 2016 was only launched on Jan 13.

“Both events, if held as planned would required city centre road closure that might result in heavy traffic congestion, causing inconvenience to the city folks and the road safety of the runners remained our utmost priority,” the organiser reasoned.

“As preparation work has been done where running apparel and finishers medals have been ordered, the committee will not process cash refund but to bring forward your sign-up fee to July 31 if your schedule permits you to do so.”

“Alternatively, you may bring it forward to firstly, ATA Kuala Lumpur Marathon on Nov 13 (a Sunday) or secondly, 3rd Sarawak Marathon Kuching on Nov 20 (a Sunday) in which we will update on the details,” said the organiser.

“For overseas and outstation runners, the committee will offer free running slots credit (any category) to match the amount that might be incurred while having air ticket or hotel room re-validated.

“Try to re-book the four-star Meritz Hotel Miri, near to Start/Finish line of this event. Please submit your request via www.ata.my Facebook messenger or [email protected] and attach receipt of revalidation,” they advised potential participants.

“Meanwhile, total cash prizes is RM30,000 as of to-date. We are working harder to get more sponsors to support this event.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconveniences caused and look forward to your continued support,” the organiser said through the statement.
