KUCHING: The organising committee of the ‘Sarawak Volunteers, Walk of Love’ made their final preparations and rehearsal yesterday, as around 7,000 people are expected to turn up for the one-day programme at the Le Park, Civic Centre here today.

A visit to the venue yesterday saw the technical team in final touch-ups for the stage and sound system, workers decorating the stage, organising committee checking for defects and performers were also present, to ensure smooth progress.

A member of the organising committee said there were around 100 people involved in the final preparations.

“Everything is going on smoothly and we will make sure everything is ready for tomorow’s event,” she said, adding the programme will begin at 6am today.

The programme is held by the Ministry of Welfare, Women and Family Development to support the 18th Malaysian Paralympics.

The Walk of Love – a purple themed event – will be an activity whereby members of the public will be walking 2km or 3km.

Various activities today include Zumba, launch of logo and introducing the state contingent icon, lucky draws, colouring competition, and exhibition booths.

Food and beverage stalls are also available.

The Chief Minister’s wife Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu is the guest of honour at the event.

The state team is also taking part in all nine categories of the Paralympics, namely athletics, badminton, weight-lifting, swimming, ping pong, archery, lawn balls, bowling and chess. It is aiming to bag at least 80 gold at the games.

Brunei and Singapore will also be taking part in the 18th Malaysian Paralympics.
