KUCHING: An elderly man died on the spot while his disabled daughter died at the hospital after they were involved in a road accident in Siburan yesterday afternoon.

The two victims were identified as the driver Stewart Bojeng Labor, 70, and 30-year-old Julie Stewart, who was seated in the front passenger seat.

The 4pm collision, involving the victims’ Perodua Viva car and a pickup truck, also resulted in injuries to Stewart’s 57-year-old wife and an 18-year-old girl from the same village who were both seated in the rear seats of the vehicle.

According to witnesses, the accident took place at a traffic light intersection when the Viva was struck on the side by the four-wheel drive vehicle while turning into a junction leading to a supermarket.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel were summoned to the scene to extricate those trapped inside the Viva while medical and Civil Defence Department personnel waited to send the injured victims to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene while Julie died shortly after her arrival at the hospital.

His wife, meanwhile, was admitted with a broken leg while the teen passenger required treatment for facial wounds.

The two persons in the pickup truck were unhurt.

It is said the victims had planned to purchase some items from the supermarket on their way back to Kampung Tian Mawang, at Mile 29 Kuching-Serian Road, after earlier attending an appointment at SGH for Julie’s muscular disorder.

Traffic police are investigating the fatal collision.
