Sarawak third in Pre-Sukma weightlifting

KUCHING: Putrajaya won three golds and one silver medals to edge out Sabah for the overall championship title in the Pre-Sukma weighlifting championships at UiTM, Kota Samarahan recently.

The Sabahans also captured three gold medals but lost in the silver and bronze medals count.

Host Sarawak could have finished tops with three gold and five silver and three bronze medals if not for Martini Chan losing out in bodyweight to for the gold medal to Terengganu’s Nurul Afiqah Muhamad Zamzuri.

Both lifters managed a total weight result of 111kg but the Terengganu weightlifter was lighter in bodyweight at 45.26kg while Martini weighed 46.96kg.

Sarawak’s silvers were won by Rofina Buda in the Girls 53kg, Mario Aleandro in the Boys 50kg, Ho Hong Huat in the Boys 62kg, Daniel Nyuin in the Boys 69kg and Christoper Merayang Johnnes in the Boys 94kg.

Eight teams including Sarawak took part in the competition which served as a warm-up to Sukma XVIII which will be held in Sarawak from July 22-31.

Other teams were Kelantan who won one gold, one silver and one bronze medals, Johor (one gold), Selangor (one gold) and Penang (one bronze).

Minister for Public Utilities Datuk Stephen Rundi Utom, who is also Sarawak Weightlifting Association president, closed the event and gave away the prizes.
