KUCHING: Forums organised annually by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) are a platform for students to enhance their communication skills.

DBP director-general Abdul Adzis Abas said this at the closing of the state-level Youth Forum 2016 (Forum Remaja 2016) at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka premises here yesterday.

Abdul Adzis said: “Our youths today need to be exposed to beneficial activities such as this youth forum to prepare them for a challenging working environment. We do not want to have highly educated young people unable to compete with others simply due to lack of communication skills.”

He also said communication skill could be improved by speaking in public such as during this competition.

State DBP director Dr Hazami Jahari, who also spoke at the function, said the Youth Forum was started in 1990 for secondary schools statewide to fight for the coveted ‘TYT Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Cup’, the champion representing Sarawak at the national-level.

SMK Sri Aman, represented by Nur Aishah Keli, Aisha Rasyidah Mohammad Lela, Evita Delynee Dyna Louis, Nur Hidayatul Husna Pandeta and Nuryasmin Musa was the state-level champion. They took home the championship trophy and RM500 each.

Nur Aishah was adjudged the best chairman while Mohd Hafizuddin Duraman from SMK Bandar Samariang, Kuching was the best speaker. They both received RM200.

Second-placed SMK Tatau brought home RM400 each while SMK Bandar Samariang in third place received RM300 each.

Also present was DBP board member Datu Dr Adi Badiozaman Tuah.
