JOHOR BAHARU: A bank officer was arrested yesterday after he was caught sending an offensive text message to a member of the Johor Royal family.
Johor Police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the man, in his 30s, was arrested at his work place in a bank in Kuala Lumpur at about 10.20pm.
The arrest was made after a police report was lodged by a palace official at about 10.30 am on the same day, he said in a statement here, today.
Police also seized a mobile phone and two SIM cards from the man.
“Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had obtained details of Johor royalty’s mobile phone number via illegal means and against the law.”
“Investigation will be conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 which provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000 or jail not exceeding one year or both.
“The case will also be referred to the Personal Data Protection Department for the purpose of investigations under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.”
Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said the suspect was being remanded for two days starting from yesterday.
He advised the public not to misuse network facilities or application services to send offensive messages which caused much inconvenience. — BERNAMA
