Fish locally known as lawang found dead in Limbang river.

LIMBANG: Hundreds of dead fish were found floating along Limbang river since Thursday, causing concern among the public.

A factory worker at Buangsiul Road Mohd Azlan, 28 said `lawang’ (buris) was among the species of fish seen floating in the hundreds in the river since early Thursday morning.

He said initially only a few fishes were seen dead but then the number increased at around 7am and 8am.

“This is very worrying although we are not sure what caused it.

“It could be the act of some irresponsible people and the authorities must investigate to prevent the incident from recurring and endangering both the aquatic life and people who could consume the dead fish sold in the open market,” he said.

Another worker Ling Jale, 48 estimated around 300 fishes of various species could be dead and floating from upstream.

“This is a very sad incident. Probably the fishes died of effluents from oil palm estates upstream that overflowed into the river due to heavy rain.”
