KUCHING: A 38-year-old man from Asajaya was sentenced to five years behind bars by the Sessions Court here yesterday for carrying a samurai sword in public.

Mohamad Rafaee Tongkol, 38, from Kampung Rangawan pleaded guilty before Judge Timothy Finlayson who ordered the jail term to take effect immediately.

DPP Muhammad Tajul Ariffin Musa told the court that a team of police from Tabuan Jaya caught a man at Jalan Canna in Tabuan Jaya during a crime prevention operation with the dangerous weapon under the bonnet of the vehicle he was driving around 2.20am on May 13.

The long sword in its casing was brought to the court room as an exhibit yesterday and the accused was convicted of a charge under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive, Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapon Act 1958.

In an unrelated case, 11 Semariang murder suspects, aged 15 to 56 years old, had their remand order extended to next Wednesday.

All the suspects brought court yesterday after being remanded for four days a day after their arrest.

It was reported that a 20-year-old car wash worker was killed during a brawl between two groups when all the suspects were intoxicated at Bandar Baru Semariang on Monday.

The deceased identified as Satiban Polis was believed to have died at the scene from injuries on the head, neck and body  resulting from being slashed with sharp objects.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder which provides for a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
