KOTA KINABALU: An official Star Wars Day celebration was held in Kota Kinabalu on 14 May which is  the birthday of George Lucas, the father of Star Wars.

The whole month of May is generally acknowledged by fans around the world as a time ofcelebration for the Star Wars universe.

The historical occasion was held at Riverson The Walk, which was also the generous sponsor for the venue. Throngs of people from all ages participated in their favourite Star Wars related t-shirts or outfits, full screen-accurate costumes, together with their props such as Light Sabers, Blasters and so on.

A few stalls sold Star Wars related merchandises, food and drinks. Programmes were lined up such as the Jedi Training for kids, photo-taking session with favourite Star Wars characters, pop quizzes and Kid’s Costume Competition.

Prizes were all fully sponsored by the toy giant Hasbro and were presented to winners of the respective competitions.

The whole event ended with a banging live performance of a Light Saber duel between two characters which was enacted by skilful members from Fightsabers Malaysia.

Some shared, “The turnout was beyond our expectation!” while others exclaimed, “I never knew there were that many Star Wars fans in KK!”

That afternoon, smiles were on faces of fans from all ages and walks of life, as their childhood memories were reignited and celebrated together as one big happy family. Friends were brought together and strangers just connected with each other as they shared their universal passion for Star Wars amongst each other.

Even for a non-Star Wars fan, you could feel that vibe.

The event was an initiative from Arthur Pang, who is a member of the Rebel Legion – an international Star Wars costuming group; working together with a team of talented individuals which without them this memorable occasion would never have happened.

As Yoda, one of the main characters from the movie once said, “Do or do not, there is no ‘try’!” May the Force be with you.
