MIRI: With 61 days to the 18th Sukma, the call has gone out for athletes and volunteers to intensify their preparation.

“We were once the house of the champion for being champion for three years consecutively in Sukma  1990, 1992 and 1994,” Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation Datuk Lee Kim Shin reminded them.

He made the call at the ‘Meet and Greet’ event for the upcoming Sukma at Bintang MegaMall here yesterday.

“Last Sukma we were in the second place. This should be the fire to ignite our dream and desire. We must be confident and believe in ourselves that we can do it,” Lee, who was previously Assistant Sports Minister, added.

An official target of 72 gold medals has been set for the state contingent taking part in the 24 sports of the 18th Sukma to be held in Sarawak from July 22-31.

Telling the volunteers to ensure that “every preparation and arrangement are in order”, he added. “All eyes are all on us and we must present the best Sukma and Sarawak is the best.”

Lee, who is also Assistant Minister of Tourism, also hoped that Sukma would also attract sport enthusiasts including their family and friends to come to Sarawak for the games and experience the unique and beautiful culture, nature and lifestyle of Sarawakians.

The ‘Meet and Greet’ programme was organised by the State Sports Council working in collaboration with Lea Sports Centre and Bintang MegaMall Miri.

Also present at the event were Ministry of Youth and Sports permanent secretary Kameri Affendi, Sarawak Sports Council director Dr Ong Kong Swee and Miri Resident Anthonio Khati Galis.
