SIBU: Police believe they have solved one of the two cases of using fire crackers to damage cars following the arrest of two men here and another in Sri Aman.

The first case on Wednesday involved the use of an explosive device – made with fire crackers – outside a house at Tun Ahmad Zaidi Edruce Road.

The second case occurred on Saturday night at Lane 4 of Tuanku Osman Road near midnight.

Police believed a romantic relationship problem could have sparked the first case.

The fire cracker incident occurred when a man and his wife were awaken by a loud explosion outside his house.

Upon checking, the 50-year-old saw strangers on a motorcycle speeding off.

He believed it was they who hurled the explosive device into his garage, causing his car to catch fire. The back windscreen of his car was shattered and smoke billowed from the back seat.

He managed to douse the fire.

Police arrested two suspects in their 20s at Kampung Nyabor Road on Saturday at 7.30pm, and with the help of their counterparts in Sri Aman, they arrested the third suspect yesterday afternoon.

Police are now probing to determine whether the third suspect is the mastermind. He will be brought back from Sri Aman to help in the probe.

As for the second incident at 11.30pm at Tuanku Osman Road on Saturday, deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo confirmed that the damage to the car was due to firecrackers.

According to the police, the owner had parked his car there at 9.30pm, but when he returned two hours later, he found his Honda Accord damaged.

He believed firecrackers had been lit, causing his car’s back bumper to fall off and the back lights of his car damaged.

Koo said the 42-year-old victim lodged a police report at 12.45am.

He said they would check on the CCTV images to identify the criminal.
