KUCHING: Some 100 scouts from various schools throughout the city participated in an educational programme, ‘Kursus Lencana Api’, with the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) at its headquarters near Jalan Setia Raja here recently.

Organised by Sarawak Scout Academy and Bomba, the two-day course held from May 21 to 22 was aimed at providing the scouts with knowledge on fire safety and first aid as well as exposing them to functions and responsibilities of the Fire and Rescue Department.

“During the programme, talks on fire prevention, types of fire, fire class, usage of fire extinguishers and rescue equipment operations were provided to the scouts by officers from the Fire and Rescue Department,” said Sarawak Scout Academy state programme commissioner and messenger of peace coordinator Lawrence Yong.

“After the talk, participants were given a chance to lay their hands on several equipment used by the officers at the headquarters and they were given opportunities to witness fire-fighting demonstrations,” he said of the second edition of the programme that was initiated last year.

Yong added that after the theory and practical session,

participants were given a written examination in order for them to earn the Fire Extinguisher Service Badges.
