IPOH: The police have information on the whereabouts of former Kumpulan Mujahidin Malaysia leader Zainuri Kamaruddin who is reportedly a Daesh militant leader in Syria, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“We know where he is and are monitoring his movements,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting to discuss development programmes for the Kuala Kangsar district, at the Perak Darul Ridzuan building here yesterday.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Home Minister, was asked to comment on a media report of a Daesh propaganda video that quoted Zainuri as saying Daesh had declared war on Malaysia.

Elaborating on the activities of terrorist groups, Ahmad Zahid said the country’s security authorities would continue to monitor their movements not only in the country but also abroad.

“The existing laws such as the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA) will ensure that those involved in terrorism do not get away scot-free,” said Ahmad Zahid.

He also said that the Special Branch Counter Terrorism Unit at Bukit Aman monitored all remarks related to terrorism circulated on social media.

“The unit monitors every word and conversation on social media, even certain code words that are uploaded or downloaded,” he said.

The deputy prime minister reiterated his advice for the people to not fall prey easily to the propaganda of any group purportedly championing the cause of Islam.

“Do not be influenced by news from people abroad, especially Malaysians, at the so-called battle front.

“Do not sponsor their cause as it is work in vain; theirs are activities that only destroy the image and good name of Islam,” he said. — Bernama
