KUCHING: An innovative idea to pick passion fruits with a special device earned Ain Nur Abdullah Munshi and Awang Fizikrillah Awang Aibis two golds (Malaysian and Asian Young Inventors Award) under the invention category at the 27th International Invention, Innovation and Exhibition event in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The two primary six pupils from SK Stunggang Melayu, Lundu came up with the passion fruit picker device that enables the user to pick passion fruits that are out of reach.

It consists of two forks, one fixed to a pole, while the other moveable and connected to rubber bands and a string. The rubber bands enable the moveable fork to return to its original position after it has been pulled by the string during the picking process.

SK Stunggang Melayu’s achievement was made possible after participating in the trust school programme (Sekolah Amanah). The programme education partner, Chai Seng Hiong of LeapEd Services, not only encouraged the school to take part in the invention competition but also spared his time to give personal coaching to the duo.

Also contributing to their success were support from the cluster advisor Abdul Rahman Bolhasan, SK Stunggang Melayu headmaster Jhinku Abdul Jalil, the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PIBG), and students.

More than 136 countries took part in the international event which was held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
