KUCHING: Local fitness aesthetics enthusiasts can look forward to joining two competitions this weekend.

On Saturday, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Samarahan Campus, through its Non-Resident Representatives Committee (JPNR), will host the first-ever Mr Physique UITM 2016 at Summermall Kota Samarahan between 10am and 6pm.

Participation is open to all Malaysian men aged 17 and above, with a registration fee of RM25 per entry.

Two categories will be contested – Under-169cm and Above-170cm – with the top three in each set to receive cash prizes of RM200, RM150 and RM100.

On Sunday, the Giant Hypermarket here will stage Mr Giant Physique 2016 for the Under- and Above-170cm categories which offer cash prizes of RM800, RM500, RM300 and RM100 for the top finishers.

Registration is free for the competition to be held at the hypermarket’s Samariang branch near Petra Jaya inside its indoor carpark commencing at 2pm.

According to Sarawak Bodybuilding Association (SBBA) honorary secretary Andy Ismail, the judging for both events will be conducted by judges certified under the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation (MBBF).

“We strive to produce more champions who would continue to sustain our prowess in Malaysian bodybuilding, where we had once again been adjudged as the ‘Best Contingent’ and ‘Champion of Champions’ at the 47th Mr Malaysia championships in Sibu last weekend.

“We want to be able to identify new talents through more local competitions such as these two, and have them assessed under MBBF guidelines,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday at the airport here, where he welcomed the arrival of Kuching Zone bodybuilders and officials from Sibu.

Andy was also encouraged by the initiative shown by various public and corporate bodies for their all-out support to Sarawak bodybuilding through sponsorships and organisation of competitions.

“Summermall began with its first competition two years ago and now, bodybuilding has become a fixed event on its annual calendar of programmes. I am also happy that UiTM has joined the bandwagon — a move that highlights the importance of sports and healthy lifestyle among its students.

“We at SBBA believe that we would see more of such engagement going forward, which bodes very well with Sarawak bodybuilding,” he added.

Meanwhile, Giant Hypermarket will also organise an arm-wrestling challenge for Men’s Senior Under and Above-65kg, Women’s Open and Junior Open (Under-21).

All Malaysians are welcome to join.

Prize money for the top performers will be RM250, RM200, RM100 and RM80.
