Cop denies accepting cash without consideration

KOTA KINABALU: A police sergeant claimed trial at the Sessions Court here yesterday to three charges of accepting a total of RM1,600 cash without consideration.

Abd Malek A. Bakar, 56, who appeared before judge Abu Bakar Manat, was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

In the first and second charges, he was alleged to have received a total of RM600 cash from JS Jollvin Boby Santong and Dinah Gilong, respectively, who were the sureties for two criminal suspects, respectively, in a room at the Manggatal police station here between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on November 10, 2015.

In the third charge, he was alleged to have received another RM1,000 cash from another 10 criminal suspects through Timothy Boriul at the Kota Kinabalu police headquarters here at 11am on November 11, 2015.

All of the suspects were arrested on November 6, 2015 for investigation under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act.

The court fixed June 22 for the pre-trial case management and released the unrepresented accused on RM10,000 bail with RM5,000 deposit and one local surety, pending disposal of the case.

Prosecuting officer from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Awang Samsul Baharam Bungso, acted for the prosecution.
