KUCHING: Four secondary and seven primary schools participated in the Padawan district-level Integrated Special Education Programme Petanque Competition here recently.

The schools were SMK Matang Jaya, SMK Matang Hilir, SMK Batu Kawa, SMK Penrissen, SK Petra Jaya, SK Jalan Arang, SK Stapok, SK Temenggong, SK Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mohmed, SK Pelaman Sijigandar and SK Semenggok.

“The rationale behind this competition is to develop the individual potential in holistic, balanced and integrated aspects of spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual to produce balanced, harmonious individuals in line with the philosophy of special education.

“Among the objectives were to cultivate the spirit and confidence of pupils with special needs in sports activities, develop their talents and skills and cultivate the spirit of unity through extra-curricular activities,” an event spokesperson said.

The competition also served as a platform to select athletes to represent Padawan district in the upcoming state-level tournament.

Meanwhile, hosting school SMK Matang Hilir represented by Steward Jalak Ngedun and Sta Lauren Hawel was champion for the secondary school boys category while Deplinca Waynie Sika and Janie Jehal led SMK Batu Kawa to win the girl’s title.

As for the primary schools, SK Semenggok with Mohd Zulfahmi Abdul Talib and Mohd Azwandy Apandi and SK Semenggok with Antanasia Fabio and Aricca Buli won the boy’s and girl’s competition respectively.

Prizes were given out by headmaster Wahab Bujang who represented the Padawan District Education Office.
