MARUDI: Moh Ling Siang, a Form 6 student of SMK Marudi, will represent Malaysia in the 47th International Physics Olympiad (c) in Switzerland on July 11-17.

He is the first from East Malaysia entered for the national team chosen to compete in the competition (Physics championship) to be held in Zurich.

He is chosen to represent Malaysia after passing with flying colours in a series of workshops organised bv the Ministry of Education where participants were eliminated in each step earlier this year to choose the best talents to represent the country.

His prowess in Physics and Maths has propelled him from his humble hometown Marudi to excel at the national-level; sailing through the tough elimination rounds and finally picked to represent the country.

In preparation for IPhO 2016, Moh said he would be flying to Kuala Lumpur to attend two preparation workshops which will start May 30 and end in early July.

The IphO is an annual physicscompetition for high school students. It was first held in Warsaw, Poland in 1967.

Each national delegation is made up of at most five students and two leaders, selected on a national-level. Observers may also accompany a national team.

Students compete as individuals and must sit for intensive theoretical and laboratory examinations, and for their efforts, could get their hands on gold, silver or bronze medals or an honourable mention.

The theoretical examination lasts five hours and consists of three questions which usually involve more than one part. The practical examination may consist of one laboratory examination of five hours, or two, which together take up the full five hours.

Moh’s teacher John Liew, who has been hard at work training Moh, is appealing to all Malaysians, particularly Sarawakians, to pray for his success and bring honour to the country.

“The moral support from all Sarawakians is needed now. Let’s all pray for success which will raise the pride of our country in the eyes of the world,” he said.

He said the battle cry for Moh in Zurich is ‘Agi idup, agi ngelaban’.
