KUALA LUMPUR: The police are waiting for a suitable time to record former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement over his claim that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and other Malay rulers have been placed under house arrest.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said the police would seek Dr Mahathir’s clarification on the claim which had been reported by several news portals.

“In this investigation process, confirmation from Dr Mahathir is needed,  whether what it is reported in the blogs is true or not,” he told reporters after visiting Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz in conjunction with the 209th Police Day celebration here today.

Last Monday, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) adviser Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim lodged a police report against Dr Mahathir over the former prime minister’s claim about the Malay ruler.

Tunku Abdul Aziz said Dr Mahathir’s allegation was false and mischievous.

On claim of a database of Malaysian population being sold for the purpose of obtaining 1.2 million signatures for the Citizens’ Declaration, Noor Rashid said the police would also investigate the matter.

“If the claim is true, the police will investigate. Information under the Official Secret Act should not be leaked to the public,” he added.

He said this in response to a claim by an independent computer programmer, Azharuddin Othman, 30, that he had sold the information to a woman known as “Ratu Naga” for RM5,000.

According to Azharuddin, he was only paid RM 1,000. – Bernama
