TAWAU: The old airport here will be reclaimed by the state government to build either offices or houses in future, the hand over from the Federal government ongoing right now, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan.

Tawfiq said part of the old airport area could still be used for sports activities and may be developed into a racing track if applicable.

He was speaking to the media while officiating at the Sabah Drift Series: Umno Youth Cup 2016 at Shan Shui Golf & Country Club, Jalan Apas, Batu 10 here on Friday.

Also present were the organising chairman Andi Muhd Suryady Bandy and the organising advisor Yamani Hafez DSP Musa.

“Drift is a familiar activity in foreign countries and I hope it will attract the interest of young people once it is introduced in Sabah. There is still room for improvement for this drift activity if there is good response.

“This is one kind of positive lifestyle activity which not only prevent young people from getting involved in negative activities but also unearth their talent to compete with other countries,” said Tawfiq.

Meanwhile, Andi disclosed that the two-day drift activity would be held yesterday and today (May 29) at Tanjung Batu which includes a training session and competition.

It also would be held in Beaufort in August, Papar (October) and Sandakan (December) which will be launched by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman.

Forty participants throughout the state including some from Kuala Lumpur have participated in this drift activity so far.
