KUCHING: SMK Bintulu has won the national overall championship title for the First Lego League (FLL) Malaysia 2016.

The ten students of SMK Bintulu who participated in the competition and won the honour for Sarawak are Nicholas Ngu, Ting Siang Bing, Huong Siew Yung, Caitlyn Chang, Prerthan Munireternam, Jeremy Cheong, Josiah Yang, Calvin Ling, Stephen Yiap and Jocelyn Neo.‎

The competition was held from May 27 to 29 at Institusi Pendidikan Guru Kampus Bahasa Melayu, Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur.

The next step for these winning students are preparing and raising funds to compete in the International FLL, which will be held from July 5 to 7 in Australia.

“The only problem these students are facing now is funding.  They will need at least RM60,000 for air tickets, accommodation, food and other expenses to go as far as Australia to participate in the competition,” coach Ling Sim Hie told The Borneo Post today (May 30).

Apart from winning the overall championship, the students also won fifth place in the Robot Performance category.

This is the second time the school has won the national overall championship title in the competition, with the first being in 2011.

In 2012, the school won second place in the national overall championship. The winning students that year managed to raise enough funds to compete in Germany, bagging the international overall championship.

There was a lapse of three years before the school started to take part in the competition again this year.
