KUCHING: Sarawak Veteran Rangers Association (SVRA) yearns to have an economic activity centre, and the state government will consider their request.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said he would forward the request to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

“The proposed economic activity centre is meant to assist SVRA members. This is a noble approach,” said Uggah during the SVRA Appreciation Dinner at Merdeka Palace Hotel on Saturday.

He was representing Adenan at the function.

Uggah, who is also Modernisation of Agriculture and Rural Economy Minister, said the association could also meet him to discuss other ways to assist their members.

“My ministry has a lot of agriculture-related programmes to assist rural folk; therefore, we can sit down to discuss ways that veteran rangers could benefit from these programmes.”

Meanwhile, in his text-of-speech that was read out by Uggah, Adenan said the peace and tranquillity that the state was enjoying today was partly the result of the struggles and sacrifices of the veteran rangers.

He thus urged the association to be active to safeguard the welfare of its members and respective families.

“The state government has a variety of socio-economic programmes to assist the people. I hope the association members are aware of them and can benefit from them.”

At the gathering, Uggah announced a grant of RM30,000 for the association for its activities.

Also present were SVRA president Lt Col (Rtd) Robert Rizal Abdullah and SVRA secretary-general Capt (Rtd) Mohd Johari Ibrahim.
