KUCHING: Gawai is in the air but state police were unrelenting on the ground with raids on illegal gambling held across the state over the weekend.

In a statement yesterday, state CID chief SAC Dev Kumar said the state police headquarters (IPK) and six police districts conducted raids on illegal lottery (illegal 4D), cyber gambling and cock-fighting.

Nine raids were conducted from May 23- 29 in Kuching, Padawan, Sibu, Miri, Kota Samarahan, Betong and Meradong.

In the crackdown, six raids were made on illegal lottery, two on cyber gambling while police busted one cock-fight (in Betong). He pointed out that the nine raids resulted in 32 arrests while gambling equipment was seized as exhibits. Three foreigners were among the 32 arrested, with ages ranging from 18 to 71. Of the total, 28 were males and the rest females. Four persons were arrested for cock-fighting in a jungle at Debak, Betong. Twenty persons were arrested for cyber gambling and eight for illegal character lottery.

“Cash amounting to RM10,027 were seized during the raids,” SAC Dev said, adding that 29 computers and gambling machines were also seized.

The police teams also seized various exhibits relating to illegal lottery such as portable printers, mobile phones, calculators, betting ledgers and slips.
