SIBU: The Ramadan bazaar at Sibu Town Square phase two, which will house some 177 stalls has been described as the biggest ever to be organised here.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Sarawak Bumiputera Hawkers and Petty Traders Association Sibu unit chairman Mohamad Safree Mohamad said this was the first time the Ramadan bazaar has achieved that number of stalls.

“The response from traders was simply overwhelming and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has given approval for us to set up the Ramadan bazaar.

“There will be 17 stalls selling barbeque food with another 160 stalls offering a wide variety of local delicacies.

“Food lovers will be spoilt for choice,” enthused Mohamad Safree.

He said the Ramadan bazaar would also be an ideal avenue for racial solidarity and social cohesion since people from all walks of life could visit the stalls.

In addition, he opined that the Ramadan bazaar has good potential for food tourism.

Mohamad Safree also pointed out that installation work was underway to connect water supply and power to the bazaar before the start of the fasting month.

He also called for cooperation from traders to ensure cleanliness in the handling and preparation of food at the bazaar.

The month-long event, from June 6 to July 4, is organised by the pro-tem committee of Ramadan bazaar, in collaboration with Sarawak Bumiputera Hawkers and Petty Traders Association Sibu unit.

Assistant Minister for Science Research and Biotechnology Dr Annuar Rapaee is expected to officiate at the bazaar on June 12.

On another note, Councillor Ibrahim Laili, who is also Saberkas Nangka branch vice-chairman, said the organisation would be involved in the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) this year for the Malay/Melanau Pavillion.
