KOTA BAHARU: PAS has taken the approach of seeking as many political allies which share the views of the party and avoid making enemies of their rivals.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said apart from that, PAS also needed to be more open and ready to forgive the faults of other parties so long as they were not against Islamic laws which was the struggle of the party.

“We need to take a strategic approach of getting as many friends as possible and not enemies. Under the concept, we will move closer to political parties which share our similarities and forgive the differences which could be forgiven,” he said in his winding-up speech at the 62nd PAS annual general assembly (Muktamar) at Pusat Tarbiah Islamiah Kelantan, Pengkalan Chepa here, yesterday.

He said in adopting the approach, PAS held discussions with the federal government under the leadership of Barisan Nasional on the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) Bill 2016 which was tabled at Dewan Rakyat on May 26.

“We took the measure of government to government approach. The Kelantan government took the initiative to discuss with the federal government. If matters on highway, bridge and port of Penang could be discussed, surely religious matters could also be discussed,” he said.

The PAS annual general assembly which began yesterday proceeded smoothly before coming to a close yesterday. The muktamar was preceded by the general assemblies of party wings such as the Ulamak, Youth and Women wings on Tuesday and Wednesday.

As expected, all party delegates who spoke touched on the Private Member’s Bill on the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) (Amendment) 2016 which was tabled at the Dewan Rakyat by the PAS president on May 26.

When debating on the president’s policy speech, all delegates unanimously endorsed the proposal, apart from describing it as a success in PAS’ struggle.

Besides the issue, PAS also introduced a new orientation in its role as an opposition via its Culture of Political Maturity and Moderation (BPMS).

Through BPMS, the party wanted to stay away from rhetorics without providing any resolutions or punishing without valid facts to the extent of going against the sincerity of the Malaysian community’s psychology.

Meanwhile, five resolutions encompassing empowering the party, education, Syariah Courts as well as education and economics of the younger generation were passed while one proposal was postponed. Kedah will host the party’s annual general assembly next year. — Bernama
