KUALA LUMPUR: Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali yesterday said he would contact his counterpart in the United Kingdom for more information on British paedophile Richard Huckle’s case.
He said he would also request the information from the British High Commissioner in Malaysia.
He said the information was necessary to facilitate investigation on the case in the country.
“The problem is no police report has been lodged on the case (in Malaysia). That is why the matter goes unnoticed until the man (Huckle) was arrested in England recently.
“We do not know what really happens in Malaysia, we have to investigate,” he told reporters when asked on the case, but declined to elaborate the matter.
The British media reported recently that Huckle, 30, a freelance photographer, might have abused up to 200 children aged between six months and 12 years, from 2006 to 2014.
Ninety-one charges had been levelled against him and the victims were mostly from poor communities in Kuala Lumpur. However, Huckle had pleaded guilty to 71 charges.
On him being conferred the Darjah Panglima Mangku Negara (PMN) by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Mohamed Apandi said it was an honour for him and the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
“This award will give a boost to my spirit. I believe, and am confident, that I will be able to perform my duties more effectively,” he added.
Mohamed Apandi was the sole recipient of Darjah Panglima Mangku Negara (PMN) which carries the title Tan Sri.
He was conferred the award by His Majesty at the investiture in Istana Negara yesterday. — Bernama
