KUCHING: The Ramadan Bazaar at Taman Mini Satok (old market site) was officially launched by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday.

A total of 104 stalls have been put up at the bazaar this year.

Abang Johari, who is also Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, noted that the Ramadan bazaars in Sarawak are not just visited by the Muslims who are breaking fast but also by non-Muslims.

At the same time, he reminded traders to be responsible for the quality of food they sell through hygienic preparation.

“The food sellers must keep the cleanliness of their stalls.

“They must also take care to prepare food in a hygienic and clean manner and also not to sell food that are kept for few days.

“This is to ensure that public health is not compromised,” he said when visiting the stalls after launching the bazaar.

Meanwhile, Datuk Bandar of DBKU Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said DBKU was working with other agencies to monitor the bazaars in DBKU areas.

“We will work with the Health Department to ensure that the food sold are hygienic,” he said.

This year, DBKU teamed up with Nestle Products, Central Coldstorage Kuching Sdn Bhd, Emart Sarawak Sdn Bhd, Kuching City Parking Systems and Samudra Hotel in preparing the Ramadan Bazaar sites in Satok, Semarak and Sukma Ria.

The bazaar is a platform for Kuchingites to be involved in selling food and beverages for the holy month of Ramadan such as bubur pedas, nasi hujan panas and bubur syura.

Through the bazaar, it is hoped that more small businesses, particularly Bumiputera ones, will have the opportunity to improve their socio-economy.

It is also to promote the local tourism industry as well as local food.
