KUCHING: Sarawak collected 13 gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals in pattern and free sparring events at the recent Malaysia National Schools Taekwondo Championships.

The tournament, which attracted 653 students from 70 schools in the country, was held at the SRJK (C) Wen Hua at Batu Berendam, Melaka from May 28-30.

Oganised by ITF Melaka with support from ITF Malaysia and Ministry of Education, the meet also drew participation from other federations such as the WTF Taekwon-Do.

Among schools from Sarawak, SMK Sungai Maong and St Joseph’s Private School finished second and third respectively in the schools overall championship category.

For the first time, ITF Sarawak also sent four primary school students to take part.

“I encouraged more students to take part as this is an annual tournament … in which the participation carries high co-curriculum points that will enable students for the entry into higher learning education and scholarship application in future,” ITF Sarawak chief instructor SM Johnny Chai pointed out.
