MIRI: The Miri City Council (MCC) will soon implement the setup of proper food and beverage (F&B) stalls along Luak Esplanade.

Mayor Lawrence Lai said the project would involve a total cost of RM200,000, slated for the construction of 30 standardised stalls.

“Currently, there is no proper facility for the hawkers at Luak Esplanade. The council has only issued licences to 12 hawkers in the area, while the remaining ones are trading without any valid licensing,” he told reporters during a visit to the esplanade yesterday.

Lai said MCC also received several public complaints about the shortage of parking lots in the area, in which they blamed the hawkers for occupying the lost as their trading sites.

On this issue, the mayor hoped that the plan to have proper F&B stalls there would help solve this problem.

“Luak Esplanade is a popular spot for the locals and visitors to relax and enjoy leisure. Hence, the need to construct proper F&B stalls in order to make the beach area clean and beautiful.”

Lai urged MCC to call for tender on the project within this month.

“We will receive 12 stalls for our licensed hawkers in the area, while the remaining 18 stalls are open to those who are interested.”

Later, he went for similar site visit to Luak Bay fish market where next to it was a vacant land, which MCC had proposed to build a ‘tamu’ (wet and farming produce market).

“The proposed tamu would house 100 hawkers selling fruits, vegetables and other agriculture and jungle produce. It is estimated to cost RM400,000.

“We are going to apply for such land with the Land and Survey Department for the project.”

Lai was accompanied by chairman of MCC permanent standing committee for market, traders and hawkers, councillor Kueh Chie Tiong.
