LIMBANG: A row of wooden shops in Kampung Baru Medamit near here was razed to the ground in the wee hours last Saturday.

The victims are still counting the losses in the incident which occurred at about 1am. Kampung Baru Medamit is about 43 kilometres from the nearest fire station which is situated here.

Limbang Zone chief Edmund Dmahai Amboh said the station despatched two fire engines to the scene after receiving a distress call at about 1.04am.

However, the firemen could not do much as the fire quickly engulfed the wooden structure, which lit up the sky during its height, he added.

“We had difficulty in putting out the fire as there was no fire hydrant or water source nearby,” he said.

Joining the fire fighting team was Limbang Fire Station chief Kurong Beki.

The operation was called off at about 2.46am after it was confirmed that the situation was under control.

No casualties were reported and the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Meanwhile, Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang was not available for comments on whether there was a proposal to rebuild the razed shophouses.

He is currently attending the State Legislative Assembly meeting in Kuching.
