KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on academic and research exchanges.

Unimas was represented by its vice-chancellor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi at the inking yesterday, while TUMS was represented by its director of international affairs and development, Dr Enayat A Shabani.

The ceremony was held at Unimas Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences as a follow-up to the previous meeting in Kuala Lumpur, in the presence of both Malaysian and Iranian delegates.

Unimas deputy vice-chancellors Prof Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim (academic and international) and Prof Kopli Bujang (research and innovation), Unimas director (international) Assoc Professor Soubakeavathy Rethinasamy, Unimas Faculty Medicine and Health Sciences dean Prof Ahmad Hata Rasit, as well as Dr Massoud Ali of TUMS Language Academy were among the academicians who witnessed the signing of the MoU.

TUMS is the oldest medical centre in Iran, renowned not only in its home country but also internationally. It is among the country’s top research universities, accepting applications from the most qualified students.

It also has the largest schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, rehabilitation, allied medical sciences, public health, advanced technologies in medicine, nutritional sciences and dietetics, and nursing and midwifery in Iran — in addition to housing a virtual school.

“The MoU is hoped to help these two think tanks foster better collaboration towards improving academic and scholarly interactions between and among them, as well as promoting and intensifying the friendship and also the mutual understanding between the people of these two countries, in general; and the two institutions, in particular,” said Unimas in a statement.
